"The horses from the Magic Millions have been very good to me. I look for athletic horses first and foremost, and the bloodstock selectors at Magic Millions always pick precocious types. Australian racing loves precocious racehorses and you can find plenty of them at this sale. On top of that, we seem to always buy outstanding horses under the sale average, with intelligent heads which makes it a great place to buy horses for our concerns." - leading Australian trainer, Gai Waterhouse.
The first sale in 1986 saw a fairly moderate catalogue of 220 yearlings go under the hammer. Out of that first sale came four starters in the 1987 Golden Slipper - Snippets, Mother Duck, Prince Anton and Boasting. The first sale was a staggering success, not only because the average of $30,000 was well above expectations, but because top racehorses emerged at an extraordinary rate from this and subsequent Magic Millions Sales.
