About Us

Welcome to Australia's world renowned Magic Millions Thoroughbred Auction Sales

Horse racing and thoroughbred sales go hand in hand at Magic Millions. At Magic Millions, we believe that our commitment to the industry is your key to success. Horse racing is all about winning and Magic Millions Sales proudly claims its share of legends cementing Magic Millions reputation as the place to buy world quality thoroughbreds. Such success reflects the Company's relentless quest for excellence in all of the Magic Millions thoroughbred auctions wherever they may be held.

In January every year the glamorous Gold Coast is the venue for the Magic Millions Yearling Sales and ten days of Carnival and society events surrounding the Magic Millions raceday. The $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic is the highlight - with only graduates of the Magic Millions Sales eligible to compete in the $4 million plus, world first raceday. The Magic Millions Sales and raceday has established its reputation on the international scene, and has fast become a "must be there" event worldwide.

In recent years the Magic Millions has been the sounding board for the careers of many great horses such as Sebring, Heavenly Glow, Divine Madonna, Princess Coup, Sirmione, Scenic Blast, Black Piranha, Gilded Venom, Rebel Raider, Shoot Out, Once Were Wild, Theseo, Melito, All American, Shocking, Rocket Man and many others.

"The horses from the Magic Millions have been very good to me. I look for athletic horses first and foremost, and the bloodstock selectors at Magic Millions always pick precocious types. Australian racing loves precocious racehorses and you can find plenty of them at this sale. On top of that, we seem to always buy outstanding horses under the sale average, with intelligent heads which makes it a great place to buy horses for our concerns." - leading Australian trainer, Gai Waterhouse.

Magic Millions is an innovative bloodstock auction house where graduates are the only horses eligible to compete in closed races worth over $5 million. At least one yearling from a Magic Millions catalogue each year is guaranteed to win a $2 million race - the richest run in Queensland and one of the richest in Australia.

The first sale in 1986 saw a fairly moderate catalogue of 220 yearlings go under the hammer. Out of that first sale came four starters in the 1987 Golden Slipper - Snippets, Mother Duck, Prince Anton and Boasting. The first sale was a staggering success, not only because the average of $30,000 was well above expectations, but because top racehorses emerged at an extraordinary rate from this and subsequent Magic Millions Sales. Champion Australian 3YO Mahogany, Melbourne Cup winner Subzero, as well as Derby and Group One winners too numerous to mention. This record is second to none in comparison with other bloodstock sales around the world.

The Magic Millions Sales and Races have spread with such rapidity that they're now being held in awe in some of Australia's most beautiful locations from the tropical atmosphere of Australia’s Gold Coast, to the beauty of Adelaide, Perth, Tasmania and to the unique delights of Penang, Malaysia, there is really something for everyone.

Magic Millions has offices on the Gold Coast as well as in Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth, and representation in New Zealand - for further information or to contact us.

Gold Coast A Magic Place

The Gold Coast in January is a magic place - an exciting mix of Riviera glamour and Las Vegas glitz blended with the unique style and flavour of an Australian summer. They flock to the strip that is world famous as Australia's holiday playground, drawn by the sun and the surf, the vast array of attractions and the entertainment and accommodation options that cater for every taste and budget. And if you're into thoroughbreds and racing..... well of course you come to Magic Millions.

In real estate the creed for a successful property is location, location, location. This same philosophy is the key to why the Magic Millions Yearling Sales and Races have become such an attraction to such a wide spectrum of the international thoroughbred world.

The concept of Magic Millions, with its associated series of $1 million races, may be its greatest promotional tool but it is the Gold Coast - and all that goes with it - that has made the January Sale such an unqualified success.

Racing figures of such international standing as Bart Cummings, Gai Waterhouse, Lee Freedman, Graeme Rodgerson, and Gary Moore sing the praises of the Magic Millions for many varied reasons - but all are unanimous that there is no place in the world quite like the Gold Coast in high summer. Together they rate the Magic Millions as a world class event, proving a catalogue of select, precocious thoroughbreds of the highest quality that can stand comparison to any other Australian or Northern Hemisphere sale.

Bart Cummings

Magic Millions' appeal is perhaps best summed up by Bart Cummings, the legendary trainer being one of the Magic Millions greatest fans since its inception in 1986.
"The concept of the Magic Millions Sale and associated Races is excellent - it produces great expectancy", Cummings said.

"The quality of the yearlings on offer has a flow-on effect - the better the class of the horses sold ultimately translates to the class of races they will win."

"The Magic Millions has a lot of other factors going for it - the magnificent weather at that time of year, the holiday atmosphere and the attractions are a great lure for interstate and overseas buyers."

"It makes the Sale a truly international event."

Cummings tasted early Magic Millions race success when he landed the quinella in the 1999 fillies division with Malibu Magic and Tristanagh. The latter went on to be one of the Magic Millions best advertisement as the grey by Champion sire Sir Tristram became the best of her sex at three when she won the VRC Oaks and VATC Thousand Guineas, retiring with prizemoney of almost $900,000.

Other Magic Millions products Cummings has prepared for Gr1 success include Stylish Century and Solar Circle, perhaps explaining why he has been an avid "shopper" at the January sale.

In the last five years Cummings has taken home more than 30 yearlings from the January Sale, including such good winners as Morphy, King Midas, Slav Defence and Sozin Attack. He has snared the top lot of the sale for the last two years - the Danehill - Sky Watch colt that races as Anchiamo cost $475,000 in 1998 and the Zabeel - Pappa's Beauty colt went for the same amount in 1999.

At the same time, Cummings has also brought Magic Millions yearlings for as little as $10,000, proof that trainers of his standing are always on the lookout for the bargains to be found in the Gold Coast Sale ring.

Gai Waterhouse

Gai Waterhouse is one trainer who can boast a great record with Magic Millions products, her successes including Gr1 winners Nothin' Leica Dane and Magic Of Sydney, Danglissa, High Rolling, Brilliance, La Tache, Multimedia, Bound By Silence, Showzoff, Dancing Jester and Hebden.

"If I had to find two words to describe the Magic Millions they would be excitement and value", Waterhouse said."It has the most exciting atmosphere and I rate the Magic Millions as the best value sale in Australasia."

"I never have trouble coaxing my clients to attend because the Gold Coast in January is such a wonderful place - the timing of the sale is perfect for everybody."
"And the catalogue always offers such variety - it invariably produces a range of top class horses from precocious two-year-olds to those capable of winning Derbys and Melbourne Cups."

Graeme Rogerson

Graeme Rogerson is one trainer who has introduced many overseas clients to Australian racing through the Magic Millions.

In the early 1990's Rogerson was dabbling in the Magic Millions but in recent years he has been a constant fixture among the leading buyers. In 1998 he bought 10 yearlings and increased that number to 18 in 1999 for prices ranging from $10,000 up to $150,000.

"There isn't a sale venue to rival the Magic Millions anywhere in the world", Rogerson said.

"Holding the sale in January as great for everybody and the hospitality provided by the Magic Millions is enormous."

Rogerson's top sprinter Masked Party joined the list of Gr1 winners to come out of the Magic Millions when he beat a crack field in the 1999 Galaxy, the premiere sprint of the Randwick Autumn Carnival. Spend, runner-up in the 1998 Magic Millions and a subsequent stakeswinner, is another of Rogerson's successful buys.

HISTORY OF THE GOLD COAST TURF CLUB

The Gold Coast Turf Club entered an exciting new chapter in its history when the Magic Millions Classic kicked off in 1987. Racing has a long and colourful history on the Gold Coast, but the birth of the Magic Millions and its development over the last 24 years has really boosted the profile of the GCTC, both nationally and around the world.

Racing on the Gold Coast dates back to the late 19th century when occasional meetings were conducted in the old cane fields at Bundall, not far from the current racecourse.

The Southport and District Amateur Race Club was formed on March 17, 1946 and regular racing at the current site began on May 15, 1946. Racing in those early days was conducted on a sand track.

The club was renamed the Gold Coast Turf Club in 1965 and began regular Saturday meetings in January, 1971.

Over the past 40 years, the Bundall racecourse has developed into one of the busiest racing centres in Australia. It now conducts up to 60 meetings a year and about 500 horses are trained on the track.

The club’s oldest feature race, the Goldmarket Handicap, was first run in 1963 as the Newmarket. It was renamed the Goldmarket Hcp in 1973.

The GCTC lifted its profile further in 1974 when it introduced the Prime Minister’s Cup and that meeting, despite a few changes over the years, remains a key date on the Queensland Winter Carnival schedule every May.

Snippets’ inaugural victory in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in 1987 then ushered in a new era for the GCTC.

Courtesy of the Magic Millions Carnival, the Gold Coast is now the only place to be every January.
