Flying Queen Boosts Perth Sale

February’s 2012 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale received a boost on Saturday when outstanding filly Karuta Queen streaked to victory in the Group Three Red Anchor Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

A half sister to the flying filly by leading Western Australian based sire Blackfriars is being prepared by the Durham Lodge team for the top producing Perth based auction.

On Saturday the Neville Layt prepared Karuta Queen demoralised her rivals with a high speed win in the feature sprinting event for three-year-olds.

“It’s just an amazing rude that she’s given me,” Layt said after the almost three length success.

“She’ll go to Flemington in 11 days and then she can go and have a good rest,” he added while suggesting she could take her place at the rich Magic Millions raceday again in January.

Winning rider Tommy Berry was all smiles after the race.

“This was her race. Everyone keeps saying she won’t run 1200 (metres), she won’t do this – I knew she’d do it – she is my little superstar.”

“Moonee Valley isn’t her track. She didn’t get around it that great today so we’re looking forward to Flemington on Cup Day,” Berry added.

With a wing on every hoof, Karuta Queen ($3-$3.70-$3.30 fav) lived up to her favouritism tag when she raced clear in the straight to win by two and three quarter lengths.

Fellow Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate Miss Stellabelle ($6-$7) was second, while Amah Rock ($6-$4.60-$5) was the best of the rest in third place.

Karuta Queen, a $30,000 purchase for Glenn and Viva Williams from Turangga Farm at the 2010 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, has now earned over $1.7 millions from just 11 starts.

She is from the group winning Final Card mare Card Queen – a mare who’s produced two winners from two runners and her latest yearling is sale bound.

That yearling is a brown filly by Blackfriars – sire of stars including Playing God, God Has Spoken, Mansion House and Sunday’s Northam Cup winner Moneghetti.

She will be one of the headline acts of the first super night session of the 2012 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale on February 14.

In February her now two-year-old half brother by Show a Heart was purchased by Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock for $230,000 at the Belmont based auction.
