Snitzel Filly Tops Day Two of Record Breaking Weanling Sale

Snitzel Filly Tops Day Two of Record Breaking Weanling Sale

A beautiful filly by former Magic Millions graduate Snitzel took top honours on Day Two of the record breaking National Weanling Sale on the Gold Coast on Monday.

Leading New South Wales based bloodstock agent John Hutchinson of Scone Bloodstock Services purchased the filly for $310,000 from the draft of The Old Crossing when offered as Lot 331.

The Snitzel filly and a number of other high profile youngsters and a solid opening day on Sunday helped the sale return its highest ever average price of over $60,000 – up 38% on last year’s successful auction and 70% up on the auction in 2013.

The day two top seller is the first foal of the five time winning Dehere mare Fashions Rocks and hails from the family of Wonderful World, Wonderful Lass, Spartacus and a horse Hutchinson knows well, Billet Express, a Group One winning Magic Millions graduate in Hong Kong.

“She is a beautiful filly,” Hutchinson said. “Probably the most admired filly of the sale – certainly for us she was.”

“She’s by the gun stallion. She’s the first foal of a good mare and the grandam was a really good mare and she looked like all the good Snitzel fillies, like Snitzerland.”

“We’re pleased to buy her,” he added.

The second top price of the day came for a supplementary offering – the Fasntet Rock-Sweet Sanette colt from Coolmore Stud, purchased by Magic Millions, acting as agent for Victorian client for $300,000.

The colt is the second foal of the South African and Hong Kong group winning Jallad mare Sweet Sanette – a winner of eight races at distances to 1150 metres.

The day kicked off strongly when the first lot offered on Monday, the Pierro-Walk Alone colt from Rothwell Park was purchased by James Harron for the Kolivos family for $280,000.

Harron, who jointly purchased Pierro as a yearling, out bid Musk Creek Farm who purchased Pierro as a weanling to secure the prized offering who will wear the famous colours carried by his sire when he hits the track.

All up the sale grossed over $14.8 million – just shy of last year’s auction when 96 more youngsters were catalogued. The clearance rate was about to pass 80 per cent when the last lot was sold.

“It continued on exactly the way we left off yesterday,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said. “We’re sitting on an average just over $60,000 which is just sensational.”

“The gross is over $14.8 million but what is an interesting statistics is that the median price is about the same as the average price two years ago – so that is how far this sale has moved and it sits right up there with the best weanling sales in the world.”

“There was great competition from all parts of the world. Investors from South Africa, Ireland, America, New Zealand and of course domestically – we’re all very happy with it,” Cox added.

Fastnet Rock narrowly edged out his studmate Pierro for leading sire by average at $195,714, ahead of Pierro’s debut average of $190,909. Vancouver’s sire Medaglia d’Oro was next on $174,167, just ahead of another first season sire success story, All Too Hard who boasted the impressive average price of $173,125.

Attention now turns to Day One of the National Broodmare Sale which commences at 10am on Wednesday.

“We have a fantastic lot of broodmares and we look forward to selling them starting on Wednesday,” Vin Cox noted. “With this sort of confidence in the market you would expect that to translate into broodmares.”

“Having said that, there are a lot there and I think there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone that does their work,” Cox added.
