Spectacular Results At National Broodmare Sale

Impeccably bred mare Our Pride and Joy topped today’s second session of the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast.

The sale of the Melbourne winning mare for $600,000 was one of a number of highlights on another spirited day of selling and helped produce spectacular results across the board.

Figures across the board were up with the gross soaring 50 per cent higher than last year’s select sale to almost $30 million. The clearance rate was an unprecedented 89.3 per cent.

With the best ever buying bench assembled with buyers from every state of Australia and every corner of the globe, the sale has been declared one of the most successful ever conducted in Australasia.

Our Pride and Joy, consigned by Tyreel Stud, attracted plenty of interest when she was offered during the afternoon.

A half sister to stakes winners Varenna Miss, Silently and this season’s group winning juvenile Criterion, Our Pride and Joy was knocked down to Adrian Nicoll of BBA Ireland for $600,000.

Catalogued as lot 859, Our Pride and Joy was a four time winner before being retired to judge and served for the first time last spring by Fastnet Rock’s Group One winning son Foxwedge.

Nicoll said he purchased the mare for a partnership of Sir Andrew and Lady Lloyd Webber’s Watership Down Stud in England and the Mitchell family’s Yarraman Park from the Hunter Valley.

Stakes winning juvenile Paprika, in foal to Sepoy in her maiden season at stud, was the day’s second top seller when she was knocked down to James Harron for $550,000.

Group One winning mare Universal Queen is headed to Coolmore after being purchased by Tom Magnier for $480,000 from the Strawberry Hill Stud draft.

Pierro’s close relation Song Street was another star mare purchased by James Harron – knocked down for $450,000. The mare is in foal to Pierro’s sire Lonhro.

The two day select National Broodmare Sale rounded out with $29,847,500 traded on 416 lots sold at an average price of $71,749 over the past two days. The clearance rate soared from almost 74 per cent last year to over 89 per cent this year.

The leading buyers of the sale by total spend was the Vieira Group with 22 lots purchased at a spend of over $2 million. Victoria’s Rosemont Stud was the biggest buyer by numbers with 25 lots at a spend of over $1.4 million.

“What a spectacular sale from start to finish,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox reported.

“It’s been a tremendously rewarding result for vendors, buyers and also Magic Millions.”

“The statistics tell the story of the sale.”

“To follow on from a successful weanling sale and to sell nine out of 10 horses through the ring is a clear indicator to the success of the sale,” Cox added.
