Sister Sizzles For Segenhoe

The astute buying of team Segenhoe at June’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast struck in Melbourne for the second straight weekend when Sister Madly won today’s Group Three How Now Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield.

Last Saturday the Peter Moody trained Irish Dream won for Kevin Maloney’s Segenhoe Stud operation – already stakes placed she was purchased for $150,000 at the Coast.

This time around it was the highest priced lot from the auction, the regally related mare Sister Madly who was winning – importantly notching a second group race success.

Segenhoe, through their racing manager Bill Mitchell, went to $1 million to secure the mare from the draft of her breeder and initial owner Ian Smith of Edinburgh Park.

The result was a perfect one for Magic Millions with fellow sale graduates Valentine Miss and Lone Rock, both proven group winners, filling the placings and spacing the rest of the field.

Sister Madly was sent out a well supported favourite after showing she hadn’t lost her zest for racing with some impressive trial performances for new trainer John Sadler.

“It’s terrific, we’ve only just started this relationship with Segenhoe – Kevin Maloney,” Sadler said.

“He paid a lot of money for her as a broodmare and gave her to us up in Brisbane and asked us through racing manager Bill Mitchell whether we should go on and give her another campaign or head to stud.”

“She showed us that we should go on with her as she’s shown here today.”

“It means a lot to our stable to win today,” Sadler added.

“She had the two trials. She had a good solid gallop on Tuesday. I was tempted to do something with her on Thursday but decided against.”

“She did over race and with that (run) under her belt I’m sure she will be improved and we’ve just got to keep her sound.”

“To me that was nearly as good as a Group One mares race today and I think she can win a Group One – I’m hoping anyway.”

“She’ll go to the Myer (Classic). She ran second in the Flight Stakes to Moree Joyous. We’ll have a crack at it (the mile) – that will be her Grand Final for the spring and then the Sangster Stakes in the autumn.”

Sister Madly is a half sister to the former Hong Kong based champion sprinter Silent Witness – a winner of almost $10 million after winning 18 races and being crowned the Horse of the Year in Hong Kong in 2002.

She is also a half sister to the Hong Kong Derby Trial placegetter and five time winner Very Fit (Woodman).
