Boban To Hunt More Winter Riches

Boban will lock horns with star local juvenile Sizzling after a hugely impressive win in Saturday’s $101,100 listed Doomben Slipper (1350m) in Brisbane.

In an eye catching performance, Boban unleashed a powerful burst from near the rear of the field to reel in the leaders and race away for a stunning win.

The continued the good recent run for the Mornington stable of Anthony Freedman after winning the Doomben Cup recently with Mawingo.

Boban, who has always been held in high regard by connections, was sent north after an impressive win at Sandown.

But at his Queensland debut he endured a horror run and was caught deep throughout when fading behind Noogoora Burr.

Allowed to get back in the field today by star Sydney rider Hugh Bowman, Boban coudn’t have been more impressive – racing home to beat Hoss Amor and Regular in an all Magic Millions finish.

The widening two and a quarter length margin delighted connections headed by Freedman’s foreman Ash Yargi.

“He was a victim of circumstances when he was pushed off the track last start and had to run wide with no cover,” Yargi told reporters.

“The boss has a good opinion of him and we expected him to race a lot better today.”

“We took the blinkers off for this run and that was obviously a key.”

“He’ll go on now to the Sires’ (Produce Stakes) and then the TJ Smith.”

Boban, by exciting young shuttle sire Bernardini, was purchased for connections by renowned Irish based bloodstock agent Adrian Nicoll for $100,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

The youngster, from the Group One winner Kenbelle, was offered at the auction by Queensland’s Millbrook operation.

A daughter of influential sire Kenmare, Kenbelle won the AJC Oaks and is now doing a good job at stud with six winners from seven runners.

Boban is the first Australian stakes winner for A.P. Indy’s Preakness Stakes winning son Bernardini – a winner of six races from 1600 to 2000 metres.
