Cambiaso Out To Emulate Star Witness

Cambiaso will be on a Star Witness campaign after he scored an impressive win in Melbourne’s first two-year-old race of the season, the listed Herald Sun Superracing Stakes (1000m) at Flemington today.

A colt by renowned juvenile sire More Than Ready, Cambiaso sat just off the leaders for much of the race before coming with a strong run over the concluding stages to beat Imprimus and Lamingtons.

A $300,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase, Cambiaso is trained at Flemington by Danny O’Brien.

“He’s a beautiful colt,” O’Brien said. “We paid $300,000 for him at the Gold Coast – bred by Johnny Cornish at Torryburn.”

“He was a lovely yearling and he’s been one of those horses who when you broke him in you knew he was pretty special.”

“He’s done this today pretty much on raw ability. He’s only had the one jump out.”

“We think we’ll put him away now. He’ll be a pretty serious two-year-old come the autumn.”

Like he did with Star Witness, Cambiaso would most likely skip the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic with the Group One races in the southern states on his agenda.

“He’s a horse we’d prefer to give him a nice break and hopefully get him ready for the Diamond,” O’Brien added. “And then possibly Sydney.”

Dwayne Dunn – the pre-eminent jockey of Blue Diamond Stakes winners in recent days – was aboard Cambiaso and was impressed with the success.

“He’s shown us a fair bit at home,” Dunn said. “He’s still got a fair bit to learn.”

Cambiaso is the only foal for the former classy Sydney based galloper Flying Alpha – herself a graduate of the Gold Coast sales ring.

A winner of the Just Now Handicap at listed level and group placed in Sydney and Brisbane, Flying Alpha sadly died when carrying a full relation to Cambiaso in her second season at stud.

Flying Alpha was raced by John Cornish’s Torryburn Stud and Cornish bred Cambiaso. Another More Than Ready juvenile star from Torryburn was the now Hong Kong based Brightexpectations.
