Champion Winx Does it Again

Horse of the Year favourite Winx added another feature to her outstanding record on Saturday when she steamed away to win the Group One Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.
Ridden like the best horse in the field by Hugh Bowman, Winx was able to cruise home a length and a half ahead of her rivals in an auspicious performance.
It was the seventh straight stakes victory for Winx – a streak which has included Group One success in a Queensland Oaks, Epsom Handicap and Cox Plate.
The champion mare sent her earnings past $4 million with her latest victory – the 11th in 17 starts – and in the process confirmed her status as Australia’s best racehorse.
The connections of Winx feel honoured to be linked to such a racehorse.
“It is hard to explain,” Waller said post-race. “Just an absolute pleasure.”
“You get used to having favourites on Saturdays on favourites in a Group One race but you don’t have $1.30 favourites in Group One races.”
“We just dream of horses like her,” Waller added. “It’s great for Australian racing.”
Waller said Winx would probably run next in either the George Ryder Stakes or Emancipation Stakes before stepping up 2000 metres in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
“She went three weeks into a Cox Plate. She only had three runs into a Cox Plate. Anything’s possible with a horse like her,” Waller noted.
Her usual pilot Hugh Bowman was also lavish in his praise for the daughter of Street Cry.
“It is a pleasure to say the least,” he told reporters. “She got herself into gear, I didn’t ask her to go.”
“She is a dream to ride. She is the perfect woman!”
Winx, bred by the Camilleri family’s Fairway Thoroughbreds, was sold to Magic Bloodstock for $230,000 at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale through the draft of Coolmore Stud.
She is the first runner from four named foals for the New Zealand stakes winning Al Akbar mare Vegas Showgirl.
Vegas Showgirl, who won seven races including two at two, won two listed events and was group placed prior to retiring to stud. She was sold at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, purchased by James Bester on behalf of the Camilleri family.
Also placed in a Sheraco Stakes in Sydney and fourth placed in a Group One Sires’ Produce Stakes at Manawatu, Vegas Showgirl is a half sister to the stakes performer Black Magic Maggie.
