Deserved Stakes Win For Outlandish Lad

Quality South Australian sprinter Outlandish Lad scored a breakthrough stakes success at Moonee Valley last night when he scored a rails hugging win in the listed Trojan Hand Tools Night Handicap (1200m).

Expertly ridden by proven big race rider Damien Oliver, Outlandish Lad finished too well for the bookies favourite Shock Value in a quinella results for Magic Millions graduates.

A bright grey son of Fantastic Light, Outlandish Lad was sent out a $7.50 pop following an impressive previous start win at Morphettville in his native state of South Australia.

“He’s a good honest and tough horse who is always thereabouts,” winning trainer Dennis O’Leary said.

“And gee it was a great ground saving ride from Damien – just perfect – it al turned out well.”

Outlandish Lad has spent time and won for other trainers and is now enjoying his new environment at Normanville.

Bred and raced by Des Gommers, Outlandish Lad was offered for sale at the 2007 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale through the draft of Eagle Ridge Thoroughbreds.

The grey was passed in $5,000 shy of his $30,000 reserve – a modest price considering his earnings now sit at over $400,000.

His impressive race record reads out at nine wins and 11 minor placings for 34 starts. Prior to his stakes victory last night he’d earned black type with three stakes race runner-up placings.

Outlandish Lad is the 29th individual stakes winner for Rahy’s Breeders’ Cup Turf hero Fantastic Light.

Fantastic Light’s matings with the Regal Classic mare Quantum Leap have provided two of the 29 black type winners.

Outlandish Lad’s full brother It’llbefantastic won the Hilton Stakes at Flemington before being sold to Hong Kong where he is now known as Blazing Saddles.

Quantum Leap, the dam of Outlandish Lad, won two races in Adelaide at 1000 metres and is a half sister to the City of Marion Stakes winner Navy Shaker.

Navy Shaker, a half brother to seven other winners, is from the 100 per cent winner producer and city winning Curravilla mare Repeat Me Not.
