Diazling First Buy For Oliver

History was made at the 2008 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale when a Sequalo filly from the draft of Furlong Stud was sold for $23,000.

The filly, catalogued as lot number 1072, was the first yearling ever purchased by talented young Caulfield trainer Luke Oliver.

Oliver, who made his name by patching up “cast off” gallopers from other stables, went to the Gold Coast that year with enough money to buy one horse.

The Sequalo filly, who is now known by her racename of Diazling, provided Oliver with a great thrill when she won the Leslie Short Memorial Handicap (1600m) at Moonee Valley today.

“It means a lot to me for this filly to win,” Oliver said. “She’s the first yearling I ever bought and I’ve always had a soft spot for her.”

“I went to the Magic Millions a couple of years back and had enough money to buy one horse and I was able to get her for $23,000.”

“She wasn’t a real big yearling, but I knew the dam – who was raced by some friends of mine.”

Right from the time the filly was first tested at her Caulfield stables she showed she had aboave average ability.

Oliver took the Sequalo filly to Horsham for her debut late last year and she did the job in great style – racing away to win by almost two lengths over 1200 metres.

Immediately spelled she returned in May and ran an eye catching third at Seymour prio to an unplaced effort at the same track.

Given a let up, Diazling returned brilliantly with a close up third at Sandown earlier in the month.

Now a winner of two of her five runs (she’s placed in another two) Diazling has already won her connections $53,367.

“She’s pretty effective on the wet tracks, her dam handled those tracks as well,” Oliver said. “We’ll probably give her a break now.”

Oliver said Diazling would more than likely have a lightly summer preparation prior to a winter campaign next year.

Diazling is a daughter of Lyndhurst Stud favourite Sequalo and is from Miss Diaz, a five time winning daughter of Success Express.

Miss Diaz’s dam, the once raced Water Mill mare Mystic Mill is from a stakes performed full sister to Tontonan – a former chmpion two-year-old.
