Dundeel Colt Sets Book Two Record at Successful Perth Sale

Dundeel Colt Sets Book Two Record at Successful Perth Sale

The record breaking form of the 2024 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale continued today with the Book Two auction posting more lofty benchmarks.
The record price at Book Two was beaten twice during a spirited day of bidding to bring down the curtain on a successful Swan Valley auction.

A colt by successful Arrowfield Stud based sire Dundeel was the star of the day when selling for a new record price of $250,000.

The youngster was offered as part of the Wyadup Valley Farms draft and is the second foal of the stakes performed Starcraft mare Naivasha.

Leading international bloodstock agents Johnny and Susie McKeever struck with the top seller – after they missed as buyers on Day One.

“To me he was the outstanding colt of the day today,” McKeever reported. “By a sire that is international.”

“I sat through the sale and tried on three different horses – was underbidder on one and I’ve been amazed by the strength of the market.”

“We had our eye on just the one horse today – this was the colt by Dundeel, we really liked him and luckily we got it.”

“We bought him for a group of investors and he will head back to the east. Which trainer, I will need to talk to the group and work it out.”

“I’m not a stranger to Perth,” McKeever added. “It’s more of a difficult market for me to compete into with the local strength here. But it’s lovely to be here.”

Earlier, the Playing God-Fanfara colt, offered by Yarradale Stud was purchased by leading local trainer Jim Taylor for $210,000.

The colt was the final yearling bred by the late Allan Morton, who operated Queenslea Park.

“We’re really excited to be going home with him,” winning bidder Lochie Taylor said. “The Playing Gods come in all shapes and sizes and this guy stood over plenty of ground and he looks like a horse who will furnish over a little bit further.”

“Yarradale certainly know how to produce a nice horse and there’s a good back story with the horse I’ve just been told, so hopefully everything goes well with him.”

“We all know how good Playing God is as a sire and you can only hope to have a few in the stable. We bought one a little cheaper yesterday at $75,000 and we have another homebred as well.”

Today’s action in the sale ring helped push the overall sale gross to over $20 million – a record result for the WA industry. The average price across both books sits at $74,597 and the clearance rate is over 83 per cent.

“I thought today continued on the momentum from yesterday,” Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. “The vendors were willing to meet the market and the buyers were willing to bid with confidence on stock, particularly Westspeed.”

“Overall the 2024 edition continued the upward trajectory within the industry of Western Australia and gives our breeders further confidence to invest in the environment that the local industry provides.”

“To gross over $20 million for the two days has exceeded the company’s expectations,” Bowditch added.

The bloodstock sales focus switches immediately to the Apple Isle with a quality line up of yearlings to go under the hammer on Monday at the Tasmanian Yearling Sale.

“There will be great opportunities for buyers at Quercus Park on Monday,” Bowditch noted. “The sale has a wonderful record for producing high class horses for many years and this is sure to continue into the future.”
