David Pfeiffer’s love affair with the Magic Millions raceday continued today when Gai’s Choice won the $200,000 Sony Foundation Magic Millions Fillies and Mares Handicap (1300m) at the Gold Coast.
Last year Pfeiffer scored the biggest win of his training career when Graceful Anna led home the field in a star studded $1 million Magic Millions Guineas.
This time around Pfeiffer’s sole runner for the day was back and winning – Gai’s Choice – a last start winner in Sydney who missed a run in this year’s Guineas.
“They’re two different kind of horses,” Pfeiffer said. “But thankfully they did the same thing and that is win!”
“She (Gai’s Choice) is a gutsy filly and she tries real hard.”
“It was a very good effort the other day (when she won in Sydney). She’s still learning.”
“I think she’s going to be more of a genuine racehorse when she gets out in distance a bit more.”
Pfeiffer said he wasn’t sure what the immediate future held for Gai’s Choice.
“I’m not sure to be honest,” he said. “We’ll take it one step at a time.”
“Perhaps we’ll look at something over a bit more ground in the Sydney Carnival if not we’ll look at Melbourne.”
Pfeiffer said winning last year’s Magic Millions Guineas with Graceful Anna was instrumental in taking him to the next level of training.
“It was absolutely huge,” he reported. “It probably times my stable by four.”
Gai’s Choice was purchased by senior part owner Bert Vieira for $81,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale from the draft of Widden Stud.
As it stands she boasts the impressive record of four wins and a placing from eight starts. She’s already earned her connections well over $200,000.
Gai’s Choice, by Magic Millions flagbearer General Nediym, is the first winner for Flying Spur mare Faster Pussycat.
A winner at two, Faster Pussycat earned black type when second in a Illawarra Classic at Kembla Grange.
She is a daughter of the stakes winner Presina meaning she is a half sister to the dam of top Melbourne sprinter Eagle Falls.
Further back the family includes quality stakes winners including Seto Flowerian, Tiger Cafe, The Golden Dane, Brindabella and Lawson’s Storm.
