Glow Heart: $1,800 Well Spent

The value of buying from Magic Millions’ monthly sales on the Gold Coast was highlighted today when talented three-year-old Glow Heart beat his older rivals in today’s $50,000 Queensland Times Provincial Cup (2150m) at Ipswich.

Toowoomba trainer Ross Coveney went to last year’s November Monthly Sale on the Gold Coast in search of a bargain – and a bargain he did find.

Glow Heart was his name and the Coveneys parted with just $1,800 to buy the trialled, but unraced son of Show a Heart.

Today at Ipswich the gelding notched win four at start 14 and his earnings have shot to $68,500.

Coveney said he came to today’s Ipswich Cup meeting confident his three-year-old could race well in the Provincial Cup.

“He’d been a bit unlucky,” he reported. “(He was) caught a bit wide up at the Sunny Coast.”

“It was always the plan to come here.”

Glow Heart was ridden to perfection by Japanese rider Nozi Tomizawa – one of the most likable riders in Southern Queensland. He also had a stint in Adelaide.

“I had Chris Munce in front of me and he was riding the favourite,” Tomizawa said. “I followed him and he took me into the race beautifully.”

“It was his first time over 2100 metres, but he relaxed beautiful for me and it was a good win.”

“He only had 53 kilograms today and he got into the race really well,” Tomizawa summed up.

Coveney, who has just five horses in work at his Toowoomba stable, said he was attracted to the young untried galloper at the Gold Coast auction because of his pedigree page.

“His breeding and he was cheap,” Coveney said when asked what attracted to him to his new stable star.

Glow Heart is a son of leading Queensland sire Show a Heart and is from the unraced Stark South mare Southern Wave.

Southern Wave, who has another winner and Malaysian placegetter from her three to race, is a full sister to the Group One Auckland Cup winner Bodie.

His fourth dam Wave of Gold won a Wanganui Guineas and is a three quarter sister to former outstanding galloper Wave King.
