Karuta Queen Crowned In Wyong Classic

Karuta Queen continued her march to the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January with a brilliant win in the $200,000 Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Stakes (1000m) this afternoon.

An explosive filly, Karuta Queen extended her unbeaten run to three when she strolled home in the feature juvenile race.

A $30,000 bargain buy from January’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Karuta Queen is prepared at Queanbeyan by Neville Layt. She has already earned a staggering $274,000.

The filly was sent out the second favourite after two impressive Rosehill wins from as many starts during October.

She scored a trial win at Canberra on November 15 to sharpen her up for today.

In the run to the line Karuta Queen ($3.50-$6.50-$6) held a two and a quarter length victory over the speedy first starter Schiffer ($7-$8).

The favourite, last start Gimcrack Stakes winner Defiant Dane ($1.45-$1.50-$1.40 fav), was another two and a half lengths back under Corey Brown.

Purchased by owner Glenn Williams from the draft of Turangga Farm, Karuta Queen is a son of former outstanding Magic Millions graduate Not a Single Doubt.

“We didn’t think she would be this good when he bought her, we bought her on speck,” Williams said.

“We sent her down to Neville to train and she’s done nothing but bloom since,” he added.

Winning rider Tommy Berry has been aboard Karuta Queen in each of her three runs to date and he’s looking forward to continuing his association with the speedster when she heads north.

The $2 million BMW Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) will be run at the Gold Coast on January 15.

Karuta Queen is the second winner, from two to race, for the former group winning juvenile Card Queen.

Card Queen, a daughter of Final Card, won five races, including two as a juvenile – a Group Three Blue Diamond Prelude one of them.

She was also placed in four other stakes events prior to her retirement to stud.

A half brother to Karuta Queen, by Toorak Toff’s sire Show a Heart, is being prepared by Durham Lodge for February’s 2011 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.

Card Queen is now in Western Australia after being purchased by the Smith family’s Durham Lodge for $55,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

The colt by Show a Heart heading to next year’s sale is a quality individual according to Magic Millions Perth Manager Murray Tillett.

“He’s a lovely, lovely colt,” Tillett said. “He’s a real flashy individual and he’ll certainly take the eyes of buyers.
