Boom ‘n’ Zoom will head to the Bendigo Cup after thrashing his rivals in today’s listed Cranbourne Cup (2025m).
The lightly raced, but highly promising gelding had the locals cheering as he produced a powerful finishing burst to win at just his second run from a break.
Boom ‘n’ Zoom is prepared at Cranbourne by popular local horseman Ken Keys – the man who bought the son of Dash for Cash at the 2007 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling for $40,000.
A Caithness Breeding graduate, Boom ‘n’ Zoom got back in the field during today’s race before coming with a barnstorming run under Craig Newitt to win by a widening two and three quarter length margin.
Ken Keys was almost lost for words after his stable star completed a “dream” in winning his hometown Cup in outstanding fashion.
“This has been the plan for a fair while,” Keys said. “The blinkers went on and we’d been holding them back until today.”
“We had everything go our way.”
Keys admitted to nearly scratching Boom ‘n’ Zoom this morning after rain saw the track deteriorate into the slow range.
“I nearly scratched him,” he reported. “It came down to about 10 minutes.”
“We decided to run with it. It’s our hometown Cup.”
“I then started to get more confident when I saw how the track was racing (during the day).”
“Not much has been planned past this. But maybe the Bendigo Cup – that is probably the race that will suit him.”
Keys’ wife and senior part owner Louise said it was rare to see her husband stuck for words.
“It doesn’t happy very often – I’ll give ya the mail,” she noted with a giggle.
“The first time around (winning a Cranbourne Cup) was more of a shock – we couldn’t enjoy it as much.”
The win was the third in three straight races for leading Melbourne based jockey Craig Newitt. He would also win the following race on fellow MM graduate Spirited Eagle.
“It was a good win,” Newitt said. “He fell out of the gates – I was giving him a pretty good shake up going to the post the first time.”
“He then picked up the bit and travelled pretty sweet during the run.”
“He’s got the talented there and he proved that today,” he added. “He’s only lighly raced so I’m sure he will keep on improving.”
Boom ‘n’ Zoom, the sixth stakes winner for Swettenham Stud’s Dash for Cash, is one of two winners, from two to race for the Last Tycoon mare Entice.
An Adelaide winner, Entice is a three quarter sister to eight time winner and stakes placegetter Getty and half sister to Canonbury Stakes runner-up Valse des Fleurs.
Boom ‘n’ Zoom’s dam, the four time winning Lord Ballina mare Florinda, earned black type with a third placing in the Group Three New Zealand St Leger.
Boom ‘n’ Zoom, a four time winner and eight time placegetter from just 21 runs, has now earned connections over $260,000 – not bad for a $40,000 Adelaide sale purchase.
