Queenslander’s Strike With Emmalene

Quality Brisbane filly Emmalene will return home and spell after scoring an impressive stakes success in today’s listed Red Roses Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.

A member of the in form Liam Birchley stable, Emmalene showed a great turn of foot in the straight in today’s race – zooming to the front and easily holding on to win.

The win was the third in four starts for the Jet Spur filly who costs connections $110,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

“She is definitely doing the job,” Birchley said after the two length success.

“It’s really only her first prep. We’ve spaced her races. She is a late developer and I think she can turn into something quite smart.”

“She will head home now and spell for the winter.”

“She is eligible for the Magic Millions (3YO Guineas) and as tempting as it is, I think we’ll look after her and come back for the winter.”

The filly’s owners include rugby league identities Darryl Brohman, Ricky Stuart, Laurie Daley and player manager Steve Gillis.

“(For) a few of them it is their first horse so it is pretty special. It’s a lot to live up to so we will have to raise the bar a bit.”

“I put the blinkers on just to help her concentrate, never having been up the straight before and everything came together well.”

In the run to the line Emmalene ($14-$16-$15) held a half length margin over fellow Magic Millions graduate Miss Stellabelle ($4.60-$5), while the well fancied runner Anise ($3.40-$4-$3.60 fav) was another long neck back in third place.

Emmalene is the second stakes winner for Glenlogan Park based sire Jet Spur – the sire of no fewer than 58 individual winners.

She is from the four time winning Bubble Gum Gellow mare Emmabee – a daughter of stakes winner Adagietto and half sister to stakes performers Radio Song and Belgietto – the latter runs later today at Flemington.

The family is one brought to Australia by Swettenham Stud with other stars includiong Captiva, Packing Winner, Lut’s Choice, Bigelow and Woodborough.
