Record Results At National Broodmare Sale

Records tumbled across the board as the quality packed three day select Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale rounded out on the Gold Coast today.

A number of high profile sales headlined by Group One producer Zouzou led to a record breaking gross of over $69 million and record average of almost $130,000 after three days of frantic sales.

Coolmore Stud’s Tom Magnier, who on Wednesday purchased the sale topping mare Monsoon Wedding for $2.3 million, was back in the action today and went to $775,000 to secure Zoustar’s dam Zouzou.

Presented by Kulani Park in foal to All Too Hard, Zouzou will most likely head to Pierro after she foals down in the spring.

“There’s a great pedigree there and we know how good Zoustar was,” Tom Magnier said after securing Zouzou. “We have a host of horses at home we could use for her.”

“We’re lucky to have her, she’s a lovely mare and she was beautifully presented.”

The second priced top seller came with the very last lot of the sale, the Sydney and Melbourne group winner Solar Charged.

A late supplementary to the catalogue for Vinery Stud as agent for Peter Horwitz, Solar Charged was purchased by Widden Stud and Qatar Bloodstock for $650,000.

“She’s a beautiful mare Solar Charged,” Widden’s Antony Thompson said. “Just a beautiful strong and fast mare – everything you want to put her to Zoustar.”

“She’ll be a star mare for her in his first season. She joins Satinka who we also bought today and Assertive Eagle. He does have the most outstanding book of stellar young mares coming to him this year.”

Three mares shared the third line on the day’s leaderboard when they sold for $575,000. The Party Stand sold to Segenhoe Stud, Born to Rock was knocked down to Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings and Regrowth was snapped up by Josh Hutchins Bloodstock.

The sale gross of over $69 million was a record – up almost $40 million or 131 per cent on last year’s sale. The average price, up 81 per cent to almost $130,000 was another record for the three day auction.

A staggering 31 mares over the three days sold for more than $500,000 – another Southern Hemisphere record.

No fewer than 170 different buyers are represented on the sales results. The list when ranked by total spend is led by Newgate Farm, who purchased seven lots for over $6.2 million.

The other big spenders this week included Coolmore Stud ($5.195 million on seven lots), Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock ($4.011 million on 21 lots) and James Harron ($3.211 million on 19 lots).

“It’s been the most remarkable three days,” Magic Millions Managing Director.

“It’s been the biggest and strongest breeding stock sale held in the Southern Hemisphere.”

“The market has been strong right through, particularly on the better quality lots.”

“Competition was fierce from a buying bench that we haven’t seen in the Southern Hemisphere before.”

“To that end congratulations must go to Chauncey Morris, CEO of Aushorse, who was instrumental in attracting a number of high profile international visitors.”

“The impact of those visitors is clearly evident in the results.”

“I’d like to congratulate vendors and buyers alike – everyone was here to conduct business,” Cox summed up.

The sale continues on Sunday with a general day of broodmares from 10am before moving to the National Yearling Sale on Wednesday.
