Ascot trainer Mark Reed pulled off one of the training achievements of the year when rising staying talent Whipsaw won yesterday’s $130,000 listed Bunbury Cup (2200m).

Sent out at $15 after winning his maiden at Pinjarra at his previous start, Whipsaw produced a brilliant burst in the straight to reel in the leaders and then race away for a length and a half win.

The win made it back to back Bunbury Cups for top Perth senior rider Daniel Staeck. He also won the race last year aboard Wicklow Hills.

The race was just the sixth for the four-year-old gelded son of Swettenham Stud sire Hold That Tiger.

Whipsaw was purchased by renowned Perth bloodstock agent John Chalmers for just $50,000 from the 2007 Magic Millions Perth Horses in Training Sale.

As it stands with two wins under his belt, he’s already earned owner Geoff Evans an impressive $92,450.

Whipsaw is one of three winners from his dam, the lightly raced Haulpak mare Supalan.

Hailing from the family of boom young second season sire Fastnet Rock, Supalan is a half sister to the stakes winning Perth mare Valparaiso.

At last year’s Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale at Belmont highly regarded horsewoman Trish Roberts parted with a mere $1,000 for Whipsaw’s half sister by McFlirt.

The filly, now named Comesitbesideme, is set to debut from a wide barrier in the opening race at Ascot tomorrow.
