Sebring Colt Tops National Yearling Opener

A lovely colt by Sebring topped today’s first session of the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale at the Gold Coast.

Leading New Zealand based bloodstock agent David Ellis, flanked by members of his interntional Te Akau racing operation, snared the prized lot with a $230,000 bid.

The chestnut colt is from the Group One winning mare Bramble Rose and is a half brother to the Sydney stakes winner Maules Creek.

Ellis will be hoping the colt continues his great buying record from the National Yearling Sale – having netted Group One winners Princess Coup and Tell a Tale from previous editions of the auction.

The colt is the fourth foal of the Shinko King mare Bramble Rose – winner of four races including the Group One New Zealand Oaks.

He was offered at the auction by Tyreel Stud – the vendors of star international sprinter Rocket Man at the 2007 National Yearling Sale.

It was a great session for Tyreel Stud with the farm presenting four of the eight lots that sold for $100,000 or more.

Their Encosta de Lago colt from Slip Sliding was purchased by Willie Leung’s Magus Equine operation from Hong Kong. The colt is a ful brother to Quinta de Lago and three quarter brother to AAMI Vase winner Hanks.

The second top seller of the day was an Exceed and Excel colt from the Woodborough mare Woodland Nymph at $190,000.

Purchased by Magic Millions, as agent for a Victorian client, the colt is a half brother to the Sydney stakes winner Star of Luis – known in more recent times in Hong Kong as Hongkong Superstar.

During the session over $3.9 million was traded on 116 lots sold at an average price of $33,647 and clearance rate of 70 per cent. The figures mirror those from the opening session of last year’s opening session.

“It was a good even sale today,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said.

“We’re very happy with the attendance from around Australia and all corners of the globe – they are here to buy.”

“The internationals were very strong today – purchasing no fewer than 34 lots.”

“It was good to see the clearance rate today higher than the same session last year and hopefully we can see that rise further tomorrow with a good lineup of yearlings to go under the hammer.”
