Squamosa Makes Barnstorming Return

Outstanding three-year-old Squamosa gave his older rivals a galloping lesson when he resumed from a spell to win today’s listed June Stakes (1100m) at Randwick.

Leading throughout, Squamosa raced clear in the home straight to win by four and three quarter lengths – a margin which, if he was extended, could have been significantly greater.

The dynamic performance impressed the Gai Waterhouse stable – racing manager Bruce Slade already looking to the future.

“He’s only about 75 to 80 per cent fit at the moment,” Slade said.

“He will run next in the Takeover Target and we’re really looking forward to the spring with him.”

The Not a Single Doubt galloper was purchased by Star Thoroughbreds for $140,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale from the draft of Arrowfield Stud.

Denise Martin, of Star Thoroughbreds, was all smiles as she cheered home her syndicated galloper from Eagle Farm.

“That was just fabulous,” she beamed. “He’s an outstanding colt and it’s great to see him from back so well and win brilliantly like that.”

“Squamosa is the most exciting of colts and it’s a bit of a relief to see him back.”

“Gai has been very patient with him. She wanted him to resume with a win a first up.”

“Getting him ready was difficult with the weather and the wet tracks – with trials being called off. But she persisted and got him right to kick off today,” Martin added.

“We can’t wait to get him down to Melbourne to hopefully win a Group One after he was close in the Golden Rose. He deserves to win one.”

Squamosa, a graduate of Arrowfield Stud, is by former Magic Millions graduate Not a Single Doubt and is from the stakes winning Success Express mare Class Success.

Class Success has been represented by three runners, all of them are winners. Squamosa’s stakes performed stablemate Flying Success is a half sister.

Squamosa is the winner of four of his five starts and he’s already earned his connections over $430,000.
