A colt by sire sensation Fastnet Rock has rocketed to the top of the leaderboard at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Consigned by Lomar Park Stud, the colt from the well bred mare Smart Company sold for $1.35 million – the highest price seen at the sale since 2009.

Tom Magnier from Coolmore Australia signed for the colt after a fierce bidding duel with agent James Harron, bidding for long time client Dr Edmund Bateman.

“We know how the well the stallion is going and the colt is a lovely individual,” Magnier said. “He is by the right sire and we’re delighted to have him.”

“You have to pay for the good ones and he’s a good one,” Magnier added. “He has the type and the pedigree.”

Magnier immediately announced champion Randwick trainer Gai Waterhouse would be given the high priced colt to train.

“He’s just a magnificent colt,” Waterhouse said.

“He’s poetry in motion and the last colt I said that about was Pierro and he turned out a champion and from this sale as well – let’s hope he turns out as good.”

“There’s good speed in the family and I am delighted to be given him to train by Coolmore Stud. He just glides over the ground, such an exciting colt.”

There was no surprise in seeing leading Flemington trainer Mark Kavanagh securing a pair of quality youngsters by top international sire Street Cry.

He went toe to toe with Hong Kong’s George Moore to buy Baramul Stud’s Villa Bled colt for $550,000.

“I bought him with a couple of good stable clients in mind,” Kavanagh said. “But there’s a few shares still available and he’ll fill fast.”

“The stable has obviously had a lot of luck with the breed with Whobegotyou and Shocking and others and this bloke is better bred than them and looks a better type at the same stage.”

“I’m excited to buy him. You don’t often see a horse of his quality and he really took my eye,” Kavanagh added.

Kavanagh also signed for a Street Cry colt from World Peace, again from Baramul Stud, for $280,000.

Former top racecaller and media identity David Raphael has made his mark at the auction stepping up to buy Vinery Stud’s Encosta de Lago colt from Sliding Cube for $460,000.

Gai Waterhouse and James Harron continued their strong buying spree after two sessions they have signed for 16 lots at a spend of $4.33 million.

Waterhouse’s syndication partner Star Thoroughbreds have signed for 14 likely prospects at a spend of $1.54 million.

Splitting those two on the leading buyers table is the Hong Kong Jockey Club with its 7 lots costing $1.7 million.

“There’s been a great spread of buyers to date,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox reported.

“The sale had a couple of soft patches during the day, but warmed up as the day continued and overall we’re happy with the results achieved.”

“We’re keen to see the clearance rate continue to rise and it won’t be long before hitting 80 per cent. A goal would be to get to 85 per cent – if that was achieved it would be phenomenal.”

“There’s been some great bidding duels over the two days so far and there’s also been some great value on offer.”

“We’ve still got some high quality lots to go under the hammer during tomorrow’s third session and Saturday night’s session four,” Cox added.

The third session of the auction will commence at 11am (Qld time) tomorrow.
