Top Trainers Swoop At Belmont

Two yearlings shared the honours during the third session of the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale at Belmont today.

A filly by Oratorio and a colt by Blackfriars were the day’s top sellers – both being picked up by leading local stables for $110,000.

Trevor Andrews, bidding on behalf of Craig Thompson’s Mt Hallowell Stud, was delighted when able to purchase the Mungrup Stud Oratorio filly from Klazig.

The filly is the third foal of a Sydney winning Flying Spur mare who hails from the family of Group One winners Rouslan and Quick Star.

Neville Parnham nabbed the other top seller – the Blackfriars-Crossed Wires colt from Durham Lodge.

Parnham was able to outbid the Penang Turf Club to secure the youngster – a three quarter brother to stakes performers Wynyard Hall and Dark General.

Wynyard Hall was in the news on the weekend when her daughter Darlington Abbey won the Magic Millions Perth 2YO Classic.

Darlington Abbey’s trainer Simon Miller was active again today and made it nine purchases for the select component of the sale. He purchased another at the premier session.

“It’s been a great sale so far and I’ve bought some lovely yearlings,” Miller said. “And I will be back on Saturday night for the general session – I love the Perth Sales!”

The select sale rounded out with the sale gross of $5.4 million traded on 225 lots at an average price of $24,000. The clearance rate improved today and reached 69.2 per cent.

That pushed the overall sale gross to $12,352,500 – almost $300,000 higher than for the same sessions last year. The overall sale clearance is 72.3 per cent – up from 67 last year.

“The premier and select sale sessions have concluded and overall the sale went well,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said.

“Quality yearlings attracted good interest and accordingly sold well with a strong buying bench.”

“There’s a reason behind most of the passed in lots and breeders need to reassess where they are at with that style of horse,” Cox added.

“Those who presented quality lots were rewarded and the buyers who were at the sale competed strongly for them – there was good demand for quality over all three sessions.”

The fourth day of the sale, a general session, will be held from 5.30pm (WA time) on Saturday and a Racehorse Sale will follow immediately after the last yearling goes under the hammer.

“Any buyers looking for exceptional value should ensure they are at Belmont on Saturday night to compete for a range of top yearling prospects as well as proven race winners.”
