Untapped Amphitrite Stars in Thousand Guineas

Amphitrite has emerged as one of Australia’s most progressive and exciting gallopers after an amazing win in today’s Group One Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield.

The untapped filly, a $50,000 Adelaide Yearling Sale buy for Flying Start Syndications, made it four straight wins and looks a potential Oaks winner with her incredible Guineas triumph.

Last from the start until passing the 600 metre mark, Amphitrite swung the widest and then produced a stunning burst in the straight to reel in fellow Magic Millions purchase Fundamentalist to win.

A winner of a Sale Maiden four runs back, Amphitrite won a mid-weeker at Flemington before last Saturday winning the Group Two Edward Manifold Stakes at the same track.

It proved a master strike by record breaking trainer Darren Weir who was all smiles after the rising star flew home to score her first Group One win.

“I spoke to Craig (Williams, jockey) before the race and just said we’ll ride her to run well,” Weir said.

“She’s going to get back and let’s hope they go quick enough for us to get over the top of them.”

“She showed us a little bit in her first prep but nothing like this. She went out, matured and turned into a nice, big strong filly.”

Weir said provided the filly pulled up well she would almost certainly head to the Wakeful Stakes at Flemington and a run in the VRC Oaks could also be on the cards.

“I thought the 2000 metre race (the Wakeful) was more her go,” Weir added. “I don’t know about the Oaks but we’ll see what happens.”

Craig Williams couldn’t help but be impressed with the feel that the progressive filly gave him over the concluding stages.

“Well done to the stable,” he said. “They backed her up after last week, came here, pulled out barrier 16 but Darren gave me so much confidence. He said he was delighted with the filly.”

“Darren just said ride her quiet and let her accelerate in the straight,” Williams added.

Amphitrite, a daughter of Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy Sebring, was bred by Mr Pan’s Goldin Farms in South Australia’s Barossa Valley and sold through the Goldin draft at the Adelaide Yearling Sale last year.

The Weir prepared filly is from the Melbourne winning Redoute’s Choice mare Ocean Dream, a half sister to Marble Halls who scored his biggest win at the corresponding meeting 20 years ago when successful in the Toorak Handicap.

Cameron Bennett who purchased the filly in association with Darren Weir Racing said he was already looking forward to the 2019 Adelaide Yearling Sale where he would be trying to find another Group One winner for the Flying Start colours.
