Valuable Stakes Win For Upon This Rock

Quality mare Upon This Rock sent her residual value soaring when she scored a comprehensive win in Saturday’s listed Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone.

Continuing the golden run for champion trainer Gai Waterhouse, Upon This Rock sat off the speed before coming with a perfectly timed run under Kathy O’Hara to win by three parts of a length.

The win was the fifth for Upon This Rock, but importantly was the first at black type level for the valuable breeding prospect.

“The way the race was run suited her,” Waterhouse told reporters. “She has come right at the right time.”

“Her run in Adelaide last start was outstanding. Today the way they ran along, Kathy let her find her feet and she can home really nicely.”

“It was a joy to see her win,” Waterhouse summed up.

Upon This Rock is raced by Australian Turf Club board member Laurie Macri having been purchased for him by good friend and leading bloodstock agent James Bester for $225,000 at the 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Upon This Rock, a daughter of Fastnet Rock, is one of four black type gallopers, from four runners, for the winning mare Joleur.

A well related daughter of Bite the Bullet, Joleur has made a great name for herself as a grand producer through the exploits of her progeny – stakes winners Gaze On, Bhutane Dane and now Upon This Rock and stakes placegetter Rogue Warrior.

Upon This Rock is a three quarter sister to the Melbourne trained stakes winner Amah Rock – runner-up in Saturday’s Group Three BTC Classic at Doomben.

Her dam Joleur is a full sister to Mica’s Pride, the Group Three winning dam of group winner and Doomben 10,000 and Stradbroke Handicap fancy Varenna Miss.

Upon This Rock isn’t the only black type performer Macri has an interest with by the red hot Coolmore Stud sire Fastnet Rock.

He is also a part owner of the country’s champion filly Atlantic Jewel – the unbeaten Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate who’s early favourite for the Cox Plate.
