War Chant Youngsters Shine As Prices Rise In Perth

An impeccably bred daughter of War Chant topped Day One of the Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale at Belmont on Tuesday.

Presented at the sale by Dawson Stud, the filly catalogued as Lot 120 was snapped up by Ron Sayers’ Yarradale Stud for $250,000 after a spirited bidding battle.

Three different parties bid after the price passed $200,000 but it was Yarradale Stud who held the bid when the hammer fell.

The filly is a half sister to seven winners from as many runners for the stakes winning Bletchley Park mare Most Secret. Her siblings include Group One winner Covertly and fellow stakes winners So Secret and Secret Link.

It is the second straight year that a daughter of Most Secret topped the sale after last year’s Lonhro filly made $260,000 to the bid of John Chalmers.

Late in the day another filly proved exceptionally popular with buyers before being knocked down for $230,000.

That filly, an Oratorio half sister to WA Guineas winner Moccasin Bend, was purchased by Glen Harvey in association with Paul Moroney and local trainer Adam Durrant.

Three other yearlings sold for $200,000 – their details were as follows:

  • Lot 6 – Alwyn Park Stud’s War Chant-Admiring colt to Thomas Loke of Singapore.
  • Lot 80 – Gold Front Thoroughbreds’ War Chant-Innsbruck colt to Rubick’s buyer David Raphael.
  • Lot 104 – Eliza Park International’s Savabeel-Mamma Rose colt to Glen Harvey B’stock/Paul Moroney B’stock/Adam Durrant.

The average price rose from last year’s Day One sale to $58,242 today, while the clearance rate soared from 76 per cent last year to over 82 per cent.

With almost 17 more lots catalogued, a much stronger clearance rate and an increased average price, the gross soared almost $1.6 million on last year’s corresponding opening day figure to round out at $9.144 million.

“It has been a very good sale,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox reported.

“Having five horses sell for $200,000 or more, as opposed to just one last year, was a real highlight of the day.”

“David Houston and Tracy Wilcock from our Perth office were rewarded with their hard work in developing the sale.”

“There was an incredibly positive vibe on the grounds and this can be largely attributed to their hard work.”

“We also had an exceptional buying bench on hand and local vendors were rewarded for supporting the Perth Sale,” Cox added.

Magic Millions Perth Manager David Houston said the first local crop of War Chant were hotly sought after during the day.

“The foresight of Yarradale Stud and Geisel Park Stud to invest in a stallion of the profile of War Chant captured the imagination of the Western Australian thoroughbred industry.”

Day Two of the Perth Yearling Sale will be held from 11am (WA time) tomorrow.
