Duke Colt Tops As Figures Rise On Gold Coast

A colt by exciting young Coolmore Stud sire Duke of Marmalade has topped today’s third session of the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale.

In selling to a Queensland client of Magic Millions for $75,000. the colt set an all time record price for the general session of the National Weanling Sale.

One of the last lots of the day to go under the hammer, the colt attracted plenty of interest before it came down to a trans-Tasman battle between Queensland and New Zealand – with the former securing the prized lot for $75,000.

Consigned by Superior Thoroughbreds as lot 629, the chestnut colt is the fourth living foal of the Melbourne and Sydney winning Royal Academy mare Celestia.

Celestia’s two foals to race – Whateverwhenever and Tiger Cat – are both winners.

The colt is likely to be retained by the buyer and join the stables of a leading Brisbane trainer.

Today’s sale grossed $442,200 on 91 lots at an average price of $4,859 – over 20 per cent higher than last year’s figure.

Other popular lots today included colts by Dubleo ($37,000) and Sequalo ($30,000) who will head to South Australia and Victoria respecively.

Five weanlings offered today were sold to New Zealand – including an Honor in War colt who made $16,000.

Strong bidding throughout the day led to the sale boasting vastly improved figures than the corresponding session last year.

Today’s third session of the sale proved popular with buyers, both from Australia and abroad.

“It turned out to be a very good session’s selling,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox reported.

“The top price achieved for a supplementary lot was a record price and the average is up about 20 per cent on last year.”

“After a couple of tough sessions on Wednesday and Thursday it was nice to see some good competition around the ring today.”

“To have the clearance rate well over 80 per cent is most pleasing as well,” Cox summed up.
