Fastnet Rock Colt Tops Hit Sale

Fastnet Rock’s sale ring dominance in 2012 continued on the Gold Coast today with one of his two-year-olds colts topping the National Horses in Training Sale.

The colt, from the draft of Think Big Stud, attracted strong interest and was sold for $240,000 to the bid of Les Tinkler from Serene Lodge.

The well presented youngster is the fourth foal of the Australian and South African Group One winning mare Perfect Promise.

“He’s a lovely big horse,” Les Tinkler said after purchasing the star lot of the auction. “He is along the same lines as some Fastnet Rock’s we’ve had success with.”

“When you consider the prices that the Fastnet Rock colts were making a few months ago – he looks very good value.”

“He is from a Group One winning mare and is broken in and ready to go. He looks a great prospect.”

Another colt to sell well late this afternoon was the Exceed and Excel-Undercover colt from Rothwell Park – snapped up for $180,000.

That chestnut colt, from the family of Golden Slipper winner Polar Success, will head to New South Wales after being snapped up by Magic Millions, acting as agent.

Singapore led the way in a strong international market with 46 lots purchased at a gross of over $2.7 million.

There was also strong interest with lots sold to Macau, China, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Korea.

All up over the two day National Horses in Training Sale a record sales gross of $8,795,250 was achieved at an average price of $40,719. The clearance rate for the sale rounded out at over 69 per cent.

“The average is basically the same as last year, down just $500 on last year’s record, while the clearance is down slightly,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said.

“There was good participation from international buyers and the domestic bench was strong with buyers from every state of Australia.”

“The market was very much in the buyers favour.”

“Vendors should be congratulated for what was widely considered as the best crop of two-year-olds offered at the Horses in Training Sale.”

“Largely most vendors met the market and there were a number of individual lots who attracted strong bidding.”

“Over the two day sale we sold 20 horses for $100,000 or more – up from 10 last year and that was encouraging.”

“Overall the figures are well in line with last year’s record breaking National Horses in Training Sale,” Cox added.

The leading buyers at the auction included Singapore’s The Racing Club with four lots at a spend of $460,000 and Kranji Thoroughbreds’ four lots at $274,500.

Adelaide based trainer Michael Hickmott snapped up seven lots for clients at a spend of $223,500.

The big week of selling on the Gold Coast concludes tomorrow with the National Racehorse Sale from 11am (Qld time) – featuring the Patinack Farm Unreserved Racehorse Reduction Sale.
