Snitzel Colt Tops Adelaide Yearling Sale

A colt by Snitzel has topped the 2014 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale after selling to New Zealand interests for $140,000 this afternoon.

The colt, presented by Cornerstone Stud acting as agent for Arrowfield Stud, attracted plenty of interest and after spirited bidding was knocked down to Mark and Shelley Treweek’s Lyndhurst Farm.

A half brother to the multiple stakes winner Excuse My French, the colt is the seventh living foal of the good producing Carnegie mare Trois Couleurs.

“He’s a lovely balanced colt,” Mark Treweek said. “He has a great colour and a lovely head and eye.”

“The colt has a magnificent temperament and Snitzel is a great sire.”

“To us he looked great value,” he added. “We’ve been able to buy four yearlings in Adelaide this year and we couldn’t be happier.”

Treweek said the array of yearlings on offer in Adelaide had impressed himself and Shelley.

“We’re really happy with the type of horse that’s been on offer over the past couple of days.”

“You’re always apprehensive heading into a sale and wondering what might be there – but we found it a great sale and also think it’s a good value sale.”

“It’s a very realistic sale – a sale where the vendors and buyers can both be happy and we found that the vendors in Adelaide met the market well,” Treweek summed up.

It is the second straight year that a youngster by Snitzel has topped the Adelaide Yearling Sale after subsequent stakes winner Golconda sold for $145,000 twelve months ago.

Book One of the sale concluded today with increases across the board – a higher gross, average and clearance on Book One in 2013.

Over last night and today more than $6.6 million was traded on 207 lots sold at an average price of over $32,100 and clearance rate exceeding 81 per cent.

With a slightly larger catalogue and a stronger clearance rate, the sale gross increased more than 15 per cent on last year’s figures.

“Like all sales there was healthy competition on the quality individuals of which there were many,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said.

“We were pleased that we were able to clear a greater percentage than last year.”

“The top four buyers on spend were out of state buyers, having said that the local participation was outstanding,” Cox noted.

A number of local farms enjoyed good results, among them Cornerstone Stud who provided today’s top three sellers.

Aside from the Snitzel colt, Cornerstone also sold youngsters by Hussonet (to John Foote for a Hong Kong client) and Denman (to Bluegrass Bloodstock and Redgum Racing) for $100,000.

Two fillies by Not a Single Doubt were also popular when selling to Hancock Quality Bloodstock and Robbie Laing for $90,000 and $87,500 respectively.

Day Three of the Adelaide Yearling Sale, comprising Book 2, will be held from 10am (SA time) tomorrow and offer exceptional value to prospective buyers.

Plenty of top racetrack prospects will go under the hammer – among them is a full sister to Monday’s Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic winner Deiheros, catalogued as Lot 366 for Bowness Stud.
