Viscount Colt Tops Final Yearling Session

A cracking colt by Western Australian based sire Viscount has topped the final session of the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.

The colt was offered at the auction by Kolora Lodge and was snapped up by a South African client of Magic Millions for $110,000 – a record price for the general session of the yearling sale.

He is a half brother to two winners in Western Australia including the four time Perth winner Magic Eight.

Catalogued as lot 2250, the colt is the fifth living foal of the Magic of Money mare Magic Number – a full sister to the stakes winner of 11 races, Vizard.

It’s not surprising the colt has been snapped up by a South African buyer considering he is by the same sire as the champion sprinter Rocket Man.

Although being based in Singapore, the globe trotting sensation is raced by South African Fred Crabbia and is prepared at Kranji by former South African based horseman Patrick Shaw.

Rocket Man was a graduate of the 2007 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale when purchased from the draft of Tyreel Thoroughbred Stud for $60,000.

Throughout the day some 112 lots changed hands at a sale gross of $620,500 – almost double last year’s corresponding session of $319,150.

The average price today of $5,540 was up over 25 per cent on last year’s figure of $4,430.

The clearance rate also grew from 67 per cent last year to over 69 per cent in 2011.

There were buyers at the complex today from countries including South Africa, New Zealand, Korea, Macau and the Philippines.

And there were successful bidders from New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia and Victoria as well as from around Queensland.

The National Sale will come to a close tomorrow when the hugely popular Magic Millions National Racehorse Sale is held from 11am (Qld time).

Highlights of tomorrow’s sale will include quality drafts from Hudson Conway Racing, Darley Australia and Heinrich Bloodstock.
