Group Two Success For Chateau Istana

Oaklands Stud based sire Chateau Istana was represented by his first stakes winner overnight when promising three-year-old Golden Chateau scored a boilover win in the R1 million Group Two Gauteng Guineas (1600m) at Turffontein in South Africa.

Sent out at 100/1, despiting being a winner and placegetter from just five outings, Golden Chateau was able to sit on the speed throughout and find the line strongly to win by a half length.

One of four runners in the race for the powerful Mike de Kock stable, Golden Chateau appreciated the addition of blinkers and found plenty under Derreck David.

“If a horse comes to the racecourse and he’s feeling well, he’s got a chance,” David told sahracing.com. “Whether it’s a 6/10 shot of 200/1, I ride them the same.”

The R1 million classic is the first leg of the SASCOC Triple Crown for three-year-olds and de Kock will now press onto the other legs including the 2450 metre Derby – a race which should suit the colt.

Golden Chateau was bred by Paul Thompson, the Hunter Valley based stud manager of Baramul Stud – the same farm which produced yesterday’s outstanding Blue Diamond Stakes winner Samaready.

Thompson offered the colt at the 2009 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale, where he caught to eye of Andy Williams and we secured the youngster for $7,500 through his World Wide Bloodstock operation.

Golden Chateau is one of eight winners produced by the American winning Deputy Minister mare Accent on Gold.

She is also the dam of the four time Melbourne winner and Ballarat Cup fourth placegetter Gold Attire, good kiwi winner Pinot Girl and the six time winning Macau galloper General Shek Po.

Another of Golden Chateau’s half brothers, the Montjeu galloper Mont d’Or, is also a multiple winner in South Africa having also been purchased by the World Wide Bloodstock operation.

Chateau Istana, a son of Grand Lodge, was a high cass galloper who won five races, incuding three at two. His best win came in the Group Two Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster.

He is aready the sire of 16 winners and Golden Chateau is a member of his first crop.

Chateau Istana is represented by seven lots at next month’s Magic Millions QTIS Yearing Sale – four colts and three fillies.

All of those yearlings will be in the Oaklands Stud draft. The sale will be held on March 18 and 19. To view the seven Chateau Istana lots click here.
