| Group performed mare Miss Hellfire, in foal to world class sire Extreme Choice, was the headline act on the second and final day of the 2026 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale at the Gold Coast. |
| The Hellbent mare, who was presented at the sale as Lot 607 as part of the Newgate Consignment, was purchased by China based buyer Sheng Geng for $2.05 million. Miss Hellfire was one of three lots on the day to sell for over $1 million helping push figures across the two day sale to over $67 million. “She’s a beautiful mare, a very attractive mare, and Extreme Choice has already worked with the family, so hopefully she leaves a yearling that looks as good as herself,” Sam Fairgray, representing the buyer, said. “I’m sure it will head for a yearling sale and hopefully go well.” “I think when they’re rare commodities like that, they’re hard to get.” “Obviously a lot breeders want to try and get a mare in foal to him and you’ve really got to be able to go to the peak to secure them and her being such a good-looking mare was a key to it as well.” It was a massive result for the Newgate team, who purchased her at the National Broodmare Sale, straight off the track, for $640,000 last year. “She’s a special mare for us. We bred her – she had the ‘N’ on her shoulder – and we bought her back last year,” Newgate’s Jim Carey noted. “She was a hugely talented mare, she was a beautiful yearling, we know the family well and her sister’s in-foal to Extreme (Choice).” “She hasn’t turned a hair, she’s very straight-forward. She was an elite offering. The sire’s a freak, so if she throws one that looks like herself, she’s a winner.” “We are a commercial farm, we have to pay the bills, so it was a great result for the lads on the farm,” he added. Group One winning mare Startantes will return to Widden Stud after David Redvers and the farm teamed up to secure her future in the Widden Valley with a $1.4 million bid. The Tattersall’s Tiara winner was sold unreserved, to dissolve a partnership. She attracted an opening bid of $1 million before the gavel fell at her sale price. “She’s a mare we know very well, obviously we’ve had her at the farm,” Widden’s Antony Thompson reported. “We did own a little bit of her, but there’s a few of the clients that were in who were looking to trade out, so we’re happy to increase our stake and take her home.” “Obviously it’s hard to buy Group One winners as a joint champion filly.” “They’re the type of mares you want to have in your paddock and in foal to Anamoe, who we had a bit of luck with this year – we sold an Anamoe here in January for $1.1 million – and this is the sort of mare who will suit him down to the ground.” “She’s carrying just her first foal, I think she’s a perfect mare for Anamoe and she’ll suit Zoustar, so we’ve got lots of options for her.” “I’m sure you’ll see lots of lovely mares out of Startantes coming back through the sales up here in the near future.” “We thought she’d make around that one-and-a-half (million dollars) to two, that’s what Group One winners make, so anytime you get a chance to buy a Group One winner you’re happy to take it,” Thompson added. The other seller of the day over $1 million was Amen Corner from the Newgate Consignment who was secured by China’s Sheng Geng for $1.3 million. A Sydney placed daughter of I Am Invincible, Amen Corner is from the Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Augusta Proud. She’s in foal to Extreme Choice. “She’s a good, strong mare and if she leaves one similar to herself it will be a very popular yearling,” Sam Fairgray, again representing the buyer, said. At this stage they will come through as yearlings.” “Once the foals are born we’ll assess and see what we do, but at this stage I think we’ll try and offer them back into the marketplace.” “Obviously we can put a reserve on them to what we think their value is at the time and see how we go.” “They’re rare commodities. He’s obviously a great stallion and his sire sons at stud have started really well, so it makes sense to get as many of them as you possibly can.” “We have had the success (with Extreme Choice), we’ve got Devil Night going to stud and we’ve got a couple of two-year-olds and yearlings by him, so hopefully we can get another Group One winning son of his to come through,” Fairgray added. The two day National Broodmare Sale has seen 308 lots sell with strong statistics returned across the board.”I’m extremely satisfied,” Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch said. “Coming into today I was wondering where we would land with the mares-in-foal. I thought that could have been more volatile than what it was.” “I thought it was a genuine market again to clear 81% overall and to still average close to $220,000 and have a gross of $67 million. The median of $107,500 is up on last year.” “I felt that they were really solid numbers and it was pleasing that there was thirst all the way through to the end for the mares-in-foal.” “When a quality mare walked in, there was plenty of competition and a willingness to participate. 16 mares-in-foal made over $500,000 which is exceptional.” “It is hard to compare (statistics each year) but the numbers we ended up with is above the expectations what we thought we could achieve leading into the sale,” Bowditch added. The attention now shifts to the Gold Coast National Yearling Sale with a quality line up of youngsters to go under the hammer on Monday and Tuesday (June 1 and 2). “The opportunities are always there for buyers at the National Yearling Sale and this is a sale that always produces quality racehorses at good value prices.” “Next week will do that again. I know there’s a very good line up of youngsters on the way – for buyers it’s the last major chance to secure young stock eligible for the $20 million plus Magic Millions Race Series.” “I encourage all those interested in the sale to reach out. If they can’t get to the Gold Coast a member of our team will be only too happy to assist,” Bowditch added.
