Alberton Park: Winning One Day, For Sale The Next

Stakes mare Alberton Park, one of the quality supplementary lots for the National Broodmare Sale, heads to tomorrow’s first session of the sale in spectacular form with a great win at Doomben today.

The mare will go under the hammer, along with a select group of others, following the originally catalogued race fillies and mares (after Lot 736) at approximately 11am tomorrow.

Prepared at Eagle Farm by Liam Birchley, Alberton Park settled off the speed in today’s race before coming with a perfectly timed run under talented apprentice Mitchell Speers to win.

The win impressed Birchley who said the stakes performed daughter of Thorn Park still had a stakes race future prior to any retirement to stud.

“She really deserved to win today,” Birchley said. “She’s been unlucky her last few.”

“She’s been ultra consistent, so it’s good to see her break through,” he added.

In today’s race Alberton Park ($5) got home in a driving finish to beat Lake George ($5.50-$4.40 fav) by a half neck.

A similar margin back in third place was Jungle Heat ($26) for Ryan Wiggins and Brian Smith.

“I think a race like the Gai Waterhouse at Ipswich would suit her on Ipswich Cup day,” Birchley pointed out.

That race could well be for you – as she goes up for sale tomorrow.

Alberton Park is now the winner of five races and earned black type with a second placing in the listed Bright Shadow Handicap. She has earned over $200,000.

The four-year-old mare has raced on just 23 occasions and has won or placed in 16 of them.

As well as being a black type performer in her own right, Alberton Park is a half sister to the New Zealand based group winner Lady Alberton.

Both are from the stakes winning juvenile Alberton Star – a half sister to fellow stakes winners Sir Alberton and Straussbridge.
