Spirit of BoomSpirit of Boom made it two wins from two runs this prep with a fast finishing victory in the $101,400 listed Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast today.

Despite the feature juvenile races approaching, connections are set to resist the temptation and are planning for major interstate missions at the end of the year.

Trainer Tony Gollan said the Sequalo two-year-old will most likely only have one more run prior to a break.

“We’re very happy with where he is heading,” Gollan said. “We’re not heading to the Group Ones later in the carnival though.”

“I’d like to set him for a race like the San Domenico (Stakes) in Sydney first up and perhaps look at something in Melbourne as well,” he added.

Spirit of Boom“He pulled up well after his last win – but we’re not going to tax him.”

A $90,000 purchase for Gollan at last year’s inaugural Magic Millions QTIS 600 Yearling Sale, Spirit of Boom is now the winner of three of his five runs.

He’s looking a grand value buy considering he’s already earned $219,400. That figure can only grow throughout the remainder of 2010.

Another outstanding graduate of Eureka Thoroughbreds, Spirit of Boom showed plenty of ability right from the start of his career when he beat all but Jantzen in the listed Phelan Ready Stakes.

He then raced into contention for the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic when he demoralised his rivals in the Prelude at the Gold Coast in early January.

The youngster had no luck in the Classic when he finished near the tail of the field after a torrid run behind Military Rose and Co.

Spirit of Boom returnsHe made a triumphant return to the track last month when he scored a thrilling win at Eagle Farm when ridden by regular rider Kristy Banks.

Banks wasn’t aboard Spirit of Boom today – having to watch form the grandstands having been suspended for her ride aboard the youngster at his last run.

Spirit of Boom is another smart performer produced by the Special Dane mare Temple Spirit.

A stakes performer in her own right when third in a listed Golden Garter Handicap, Temple Spirit has had two runners for two stakes performers.

Her other is Spirit of Boom’s classy stablemate Temple of Boom – a winner of four races and a second placegetter in today’s Gold Coast Guineas.

The result was a clean sweep for Magic Millions – with the runner-up Adebisi and third placegetter Jypsiere being purchased from the Gold Coast as well.

TROPICAL EMPIRE SWEEPS SOUTH AFRICAN GROUP TWO

Outstanding South African galloper Tropical Empire captured his second Group Two race when he bolted home in the Drill Hall Stakes (1400m) at Greyville on Friday night.

The consistent galloper, second in last year’s edition of the race, came with his usual barnstorming finish in the straight to raced clear of his rivals.

At the post Tropical Empire and his rider Stuart Randolph held a three and a quarter length margin over Braggadacio (Anthony Delpech) and Imperial Gesture (Anton Marcus).

Tropical Empire has won 10 of his 33 starts and has placed in a further nine events. He’s earned his connections over R1 million.

Prepared by Duncan Howells, Tropical Empire is a son of Second Empire bred in Western Australian by Heytesbury Thoroughbreds.

He caught the eye of senior part owner Richard “Chips” Pennells at the 2004 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale and went to $17,000 to buy him from the draft of Canardly Stud.

Tropical Empire is one of six winners produced by his dam – the stakes performed Tropical Touch.

A daughter of former star juvenile Pago Pago, Tropical Touch won nine races, including six in Perth, and was third in a Group Two Champion Fillies Stakes.

As well as being the dam of Tropical Empire, Tropical Touch has produced the dual winner Tropical Minx – the dam of five time stakes placegetter and eight time winner Vain Raider.
