Dusty Gold Flies To Guineas

Dusty Star raced into contention for the Group One Australian Guineas with an incredible win in the Group Two D’Urban Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield this afternoon.

A son of Magic Millions favourite General Nediym, Dusty Star plaqyed up pre-race, over races badly and still easily held out his rivals for a strong win.

The three-year-old gelding, who missed a star in January’s $1 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, hadn’t raced since winning at Flemington on Magic Millions raceday on January 15.

Trainer Peter Morgan, like all on track, was impressied with the victory after his charge established a huge lead during the middle stages of the race.

“He’s a better horse in front but we’re always worried something will take him on,” Morgan said. “I think Craig had that in mind.”

“We’ll certainly be looking at the Guineas now yes,” he added.

“I think he will (run the mile). With the sting out of him a bit I think he will settle a bit better.”

“We’ve always thought he would get a mile and beyond even though he is a General Nediym.”

The win was the second in the first three races on the Caulfield card for proven big race rider Craig Williams.

“He went a bit too hard,” Williams said. “Stepping up to this grade I thought he raced a bit too keen.”

“He was probably entitled to get beaten,” he added. “He really fought it out strong.”

“He went through the race without relaxing at all. He was all grunt and all muscle today.”

Dusty Star was purchased on behalf of connections by leading New Zealand based bloodstock agent Dean Hawthorne for $230,000 from the Widden Stud draft at the 2009 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

The gelding was also sold by Magic Millions for $130,000 when Vin Cox bought him from the draft of Glenmore Park at the 2008 National Weanling Sale at the Gold Coast.

He boasts the impressive record of four wins and seven placings from just 13 starts and earnings of over $218,000.

The chestnut gelding is one of two winners from two to race for the Snippets mare Forever Midnight.

A winner of two races at 1400 metres, Forever Midnight is a half sister to four winners including the stakes placed Crestfallen.
