Exciting Youngsters Star In Singapore

Last season’s Magic Millions juvenile stars in Singapore have picked up where they left off with a pair of impressive wins at Kranji on Sunday.

Dark Matter and El Milagro – both proven two-year-old winners earlier in the year – showed they had good futures when they won for Steven Burridge and Don Baertschiger respectively.

A son of Stratum, Dark Matter bounced back after missing a place when favourite in the recent Magic Millions Juvenile Championship with an all the way success.

“He didn’t have things go his way last time,” Steven Burridge noted. “He missed the start a half-length, over raced, lost a shoe and was five wide rounding the turn.”

“He’s still a young horse and just lost his way a bit on that occasion and being a colt he was a bit wayward again.”

Connections haven’t ruled out a trip to Melbourne for the Spring Carnival.

“He’s still got to improve a bit. He had the better of the weights today and he should get over further as he can relax in his races.”

“We’ll just see where we get to after his next run,” Burridge added.

Dark Matter has earned over $180,000 in his short career to date – putting his connections into credit following his purchase for $140,000 at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

The Bellagio Lodge bred, Widden Stud sold graduate is one of two winners from two to race for the Group One winning Choctaw Ridge mare Loving New.

He is therefore a half brother to South American based Group One winner Questing New.

Meanwhile, El Milagro extended his unbeaten run to two when he raced away for a length and a quarter win on the same card.

A member of Red Dazzler’s first crop, El Milagro was purchased by Don Baertschiger for $100,000 from the Symphony Lodge draft at last year’s Magic Millions National Horses in Training Sale at the Gold Coast.

“He’s had a few little mucus issues and has needed to be treated with antibiotics,” Baertschiger reported. “That’s why he hasn’t raced for a couple of months.”

“We’ll just see how he pulls up from this and we may even turn him out for a break. It may be in his long term best interests.”

“It is never easy jumping from a Maiden to Class 4 grade at just your second run. I think with time he will be better over 1400 metres and he should be able to get up to 1600 metres as well.”

“It’s been a good effort as he could have turned it up once he got to the front, but he toughed it out well all the way to the finish.”

“I think he’s got a bright future,” Baertschiger added.

El Milagro is by the Toorak Handicap winner Red Dazzler – the sire of exciting prospects including Redsyn, Red Royal, Dazzling Kind and Daytime Dazzler.

He is from a twice New Zealand winning Stravinsky full sister to the group Flemington winner and stakes placegetter Muzdaher.

El Milagro’s third dam is none other than Tristanagh – the Thousand Guineas and VRC Oaks winner of 1989.
