Fastnet Rock Colt Stars At National Weanling Sale

A cracking colt by leading sire Fastnet Rock topped the first day of the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale when selling for $600,000 today on the Gold Coast.

Offered as part of the Teeley Reduction, the colt catalogued as lot 222 attracted an opening bid of $300,000 when he was presented without reserve.

In the end it was the bid of John Moynihan and Tom Magnier on behalf of Stonestreet Stables and Coolmore Stud that was successful.

“He’s a beautiful horse,” Moynihan said. “We loved him physically, he has a great pedigree and if he runs he’s a major stallion prospect.”

“We’re excited. Coolmore will own half of him and we’re going to race him with them.”

“He’s an exceptionally bred horse, he’s very physical and by a great stallion. He’s the right sort of horse to have a shot with.”

First season sires were popular today with Lot 2, a colt by Foxwedge selling at the first day’s offering for $260,000.

Leading Sydney based bloodstock agent James Harron purchased the colt on behalf of long time clients and Foxwedge’s owners Dr Edmund and Belinda Bateman.

“He’s a cracking colt,” Harron reported. “Very physical, great maturity. He had a great attitude through the sale and he looks a nice running type of horse.”

Dr Bateman was delighted to secure the colt by a sire he raced with great success to Group One level.

“They’re great types,” Dr Bateman said. “Obviously we have some great types at home. We’re really pleased at this stage it’s going the way it is.”

“They’re really impressive foals. It’s really encouraging,” he added.

The Teeley Reduction of weanlings proved extremely popular with buyers, grossing almost $3 million with an average price of over $105,000.

Aside from the $600,000 Fastnet Rock colt, the Teeley draft also provided the second and third top sellers, both daughters of Golden Slipper winner Stratum.

The filly from group winning mare Precious Lorraine was sold to Arrowfield Stud for $425,000, while the filly from stakes placegetter Quench The Thirst was knocked down to New Zealand’s Jamieson Park for $400,000.

All up the first day of the sale grossed over $8.27 million with 190 lots selling at an average of $43,561. The sale boasted an impressive clearance rate of 83 per cent.

“The obvious story of the day was the success of the reduction of weanlings from Teeley Assets,” Magic Millions Managing Director Vin Cox said.

“Their weanlings sold extremely well with the top priced lot at $600,000 selling to Stonestreet Stables from the US and Coolmore which is exciting news for the Australian industry.”

“It’s been an honour to have conducted this sale and a pleasure to run it. Every horse was for genuine sale as is evidenced in the results.”

“We have the most diverse buying bench we’ve seen at a National Weanling Sale with strong international participation.”

“The Teeley results aside, there was good healthy competition on quality lots,” Cox summed up.
