Stratum Youngster Sizzles In Singapore

Dark Matter lived up to his exceptional trial form when he led home a Magic Millions clean sweep result in the QTIS 600 Yearling Sale Stakes (1100m) at Kranji in Singapore this evening.

A son of Stratum, Dark Matter looked a likely new star for the Steven Burridge stable when he cruised home to win on debut by almost four lengths.

Connections purchased Dark Matter for $140,000 from the draft of Widden Stud at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Winning rider Saimee Jumaat couldn’t help but be impressed with the young galloper.

“He’s a nice horse and has got a bit of size about him,” said Saimee.

“He flew the gates and has a lot of natural speed, but what I liked was the acceleration he had when I asked him for an effort.”

“He’s got a lovely temperament and this is despite him being a colt. Right from the first time I rode him he made an impression on me.”

“He’s the whole package and I think he will go a long way.”

Trainer Steven Burridge was a little surprised that Dark Matter led so easily – but certainly wasn’t surprised with the strong win.

“I didn’t think he’d lead the way he did,” Burridge said.

“He led at his first trial but last time we wanted him to take a sit. We didn’t want him being one dimensional.”

“But he began really well today and has an abundance of natural pace and importantly he stretched out well all the way to the line.”

“He’s a nice horse and its good of Magic Millions to be involved in a series like this as it gives the owners an opportunity to race for some good prizemoney.”

Burridge said the youngster could have another run beforehand, but was definitely being aimed toward the Group 2 Aushorse Golden Horseshoe (1200m) on May 20.

In winning a leg of the Aushorse series and being an eligible runner having been purchased through an Australian sale, Dark Matter picked up a $15,000 bonus for connections.

A son of Redoute’s Choice’s Golden Slipper winning son Stratum, Dark Matter is a well related youngster.

He’s one of the rare gallopers to be by a Group One winner, from a Group One winner and be a half to a Group One winner.

His dam Loving New, by Choctaw Ridge, was a Group One winner in Brazil – while his half brother Questing New, the only runner to date for his dam, is also a Group One winner in Brazil.

Minor placegetters Kaiser (Seidnazar – $80,000 National Horses in Training Sale) and Awakened (Barely a Moment – $50,000 Adelaide Yearling Sale) ran well but were no match on this occasion for the highly impressive winner.
